Purple reigns in 2018
The highly anticipated Pantone colour of the year has been announced and in 2018, it’s the year of Ultra Violet or more precisely, Pantone 18-3838.
Musicians have long embraced the power of purple, from Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, Deep Purple and of course the ever-iconic Prince. It’s now the design world’s time to shine with this intergalactic tone.
Gone are timid shades of pastel and earthy colours. It’s now the reign of the bold, with its associations of luxury, innovation and mystique. This spectral colour reflects a desire to push limits and pursue a world beyond our own.
In history, violet and purple have long been associated with royalty, majesty and Catholicism. In Chinese painting, violet represents the harmony of the universe as it’s a combination of red and blue. This energetic colour is said to possess mystical qualities.
Pushing boundaries is what the world of design is all about, so in a time where change is unrelenting, ultra violet represents what’s happening not only in the world of design, but the world at large.
